Rehab is for quitters
Wednesday, July 26th, 2006 at 9:40 amA little known ( or at least I’d like to think so ) fact about me, is that I’m my favorite guinea pig. I get a real kick out of radically changing my habits, just to see how I fare. But I don’t like to half ass it. This one thing at a time notion is nonsense. Because what fun would it be if I weren’t completely uncomfortable all the time for about two days, before I start getting the hang of it.
For instance, once I decided I would be left- handed. Even used left handed scissors, let my right hand rest at work, brush my teeth with my left hand… you get the picture. That alone was an endeavor enough; I wanted to be more conscious of all my motions, and ( supposedly ) stimulate the right side of my brain. This went on for a few weeks, until my whole left arm was tired and sore and probably angry at me for using it more in two weeks that I had my whole life. Apparently an activity as small as brushing your teeth every day with your nondominate hand can make a difference. Can’t say I’ve noticed too much, but my dad always told me I was a factory defect when I was a kid.
My point! I actually had one. I gave up coffee. Not forever of course, that would be CRAZY! But since Thursday. And I rearranged all my furniture too. And a whole bunch of other things that are actually quite good for me, like working out like an athlete, and eating really good things. Green things. That are not green swedish fish. I’ve noticed a difference. Hmmm… maybe I’ll stick to the program for a while longer?
But not too long. Because I’m having huge withdrawls from no bar fries and Guinness. That’s rough.
And now for something completely different!
I was perusing the internet for some new music, and I came upon an ad for the movie Little Miss Sunshine.
Now.
I’m not one to like promoting ANYTHING. This would probably be my manager’s one complaint about me- I hate promoting and trying to sell things to people that already know what they want.
But I think I’m going to make an exception here, because this movie looks hilarious ( I mean, come on, if Steve Carrell is in it, you know it should be good for a few laughs). AND there’s two free screenings of it in Seattle! One tonight, and one next Thursday ( the 3rd), at Pacific Place.

You have to RSVP for these screenings though, and here’s the link for that. I’m most definitely going on the third… anyone who’d like to join, let me know! Free movis are some of the best ones. Well, sometimes.

BUT! The best part about this movie is going to be the soundtrack! I can’t wait to get it. It’s taking some massive self control to not go straight to Amazon.com…. but I can do it. The score was composed by the group DeVotchKa ( whom, by the way is most definitely worth checking out- I believe they have a myspace profile that will let you hear some tunes),plus! Two songs by Sufjan Stevens and Rick James ( bitches).
So if anything, the soundtrack will be awesome. Definitley looking forward to this one.
I’m just going to go with this fragmented A.D.D. format here and change the subject again.
So I found the real Hilton sisters. No joke. Actually a sideshow act back in the day. Quite a tragic story really. Vastly different from The Simple Life ( worth rejoicing about). Thought I’d share a little tidbit for those interested.

Violet and Daisy Hilton were a pair of conjoined twins who toured in the U.S. sideshow and vaudeville circuit in the 1930s. The Hilton Sisters “were among the highest paid sideshow performers in history, earning up to $5,000 per week during the height of the Great Depression. They appeared on stage with performers such as Bob Hope and Harry Houdini, and on film in Tod Browning’s Freaks (1932), and in the excruciatingly terrible bio-pic Chained for Life (1950). Sadly, a string of lovers treated the twins just as badly, financially speaking, as had their former managers. Ill-equipped professionally or emotionally to manage their own affairs, the Hilton Sisters gained and lost several fortunes.” On January 6, 1969, the twins were found dead in their home of the Hong Kong Flu.

I actually got this from an artist’s webpage. And with all the information they had gathered about all of these carnival ‘rarities’, I’d anticipated a good gallery of work. I was vastly disappointed. Just some plain drawings that don’t even evoke the same amount of emotion that the original photographs of the individuals do. There is so much material there, I’m sure there is a way to better use all that research. I’m interested.I actually learned quite a bit about the objectification of the sideshow act in a class I took last semester. Turning people into specimens and entertainment, and paying them for degrading themselves to below human value. It’s quite sad really, and I think that a simple black and white portrait can’t effectively convey all the embarassment and pain these people went through because of their natural defects.
I’ll let you know what I come up with, because seeing this so poorly done has really inspired me to fix it.

chelsea…
The innerworkings of your mind fascinate me…as you are as completely random as I am.
But…I’m loosing it..I rent cars for christ’s sakes! I need a career that stimulates my add, rather than aims at supressing it.
